Boatbuilding Returns to Boston

165 years ago, Donald McKay’s great American clipper ships were built and launched from a series of piers in East Boston.  Boatbuilding Returns to Boston chronicles the building of a modern sailing yacht, the Scherherazade, at the same East Boston location from which McKay’s ships were built and sent to sea. This was the first boat to be built in Boston's inner harbor for 100 years.

Construction of a yacht such as the Scherherazade, a Taylor 40 racing sloop, represents a combination of design, finance, planning, traditional and modern ship building skills, high end materials and the most basic of hand labor. The photographs illustrate the steps involved in building the boat from empty shop floor to completion. The accompanying text the describes the major processes and profiles some of the people who built it.
