In 1997, Boston BoatWorks was a new company, less than two years old. The three partners included two former money managers and avid sailors who decided to abandon the corporate world to pursue their passions. The third partner was a nationally known boat builder whose credentials included work on several America’s Cup racing yachts. While the first two primarily managed the business end, the third partner’s kingdom is the production floor. On such a a meticulously constructed, elegant wooden mold of the hull, a shell of foam and Fiberglas was formed. (When I first visited Boston BoatWorks in February, the wooden mold around which the hull of Scherherazade was formed was already hidden by layers of foam. Pictured, is the second yacht in production.)
