For over half a century I have used public restrooms. For the past decade I have photographed them. These museum and gallery restrooms are part of the hidden world of art – down the stairs, through narrow corridors – just around the corner.
My interest in this topic developed in parallel with other motivations:
• A strong desire to explore the worlds of visual art
• A growing passion for making photographic images
• A need for a restroom in the midst of my aesthetic investigations.
In 1999, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) mounted a major exhibition, “The Museum as Muse: Artists Reflect” The artists in this show studied nearly every aspect of museums. Both conceptual and literal, For Patrons Only contributes to this body of work by spotlighting an important function of most venues for art.
The images in this series of sixty prints are from a wide swath of museums and galleries around the country as well as a few from off shore cities, including: Paris, London and Singapore.
