I am very pleased to report that “The McCann Family” has been selected by both Indie Photobook Library and bookMARK curatorCarlos Loret de Mola, in a call to NYFA MARK artists, for inclusion in an exhibition of Photobooks this coming weekend at the regional conference of the Society for Photographic Education (SPE). The conference, “Photobooks and Publishing,” (sold out) is taking place at Syracuse University in conjunction with Light Work. By chance, Light Work director, Hannah Frieser, was the juror who selected my “McCann Family portfolio” for the 2009 CPW Artist Fellowship Award.

The Ball-Shaped Pain from “The McCann Family” Series at Center for Photography in Woodstock
Last fall I received the CPW 2009 Artists’ Fellowship Award. In addition to a cash prize to help me pursue my work, two of my photographs became part of the of the Center’s print collection housed at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz. I used part of my award to upgrade my camera and part to enroll in two workshops at CPW one with Keith Carter, the other with Dawoud Bey. Last weekend was the hands-on, inspirational class in Portrait with Bey. I was happy to see that, in addition to two larger exhibitions, my photograph, The Ball-Shaped Pain from “The McCann Family” series was included in a smaller show of recent acquisitions by the Center. There is a larger exhibit curated from the Permanent Print Collection at the Dorsky.
Mark Orton Demonstrates Foot Fault In Bantam CT
Mark and I visited our friends the Keeler-Meyersons in their camp in Bantam CT. He and Betsy teamed up against Kathy and Emmet and played two sets of doubles which ended in a tie. Below Mark demonstrates the foot fault. (This was my first outing using a Holga lens on my digital SLR.)
Davis Orton do MASS MoCA
Mark and I visited MASS MoCA a couple of weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits – especially “Material World” but also Petah Coyne and the Mike Disfarmer photographs. After so many years I finally photographed my ongoing exhibition there – between the men’s room and ladies room and visited Hardware, the museum shop, to admire my MASS MoCA restrooms postcard portfolio – for sale there and at the Davis Orton Gallery. Click to see some of the work in my larger series, “For Patrons Only” and a picture of my portfolio.
Hudson NY Flag Day Parade 2010, a 3 minute review
From the front stoop of the Davis Orton Gallery, our gallery at 114 Warren Street, Hudson, New York, here is a 3.3 minute review of Hudson’s 2010 Flag Day Parade – photographs by Karen Davis and music, “The Chimes of Freedom” by the Byrds, without permission. I hope the slide show/movie, a format new to me, will prove enjoyable to the viewer while giving me a chance to show edited (but not pared to the bone) series of work for which this may be its only mode of viewing.
