Concrete Curiosity

Concrete Curiosity is a photobook, video, and (soon) a guide.

As a photobook, I document my exploration of the physical world of cement, concrete, and construction with still photography and visual representations of the videos found in the (soon) guide.

It began on our balcony as I watched a building going up a few blocks away. I could see the cranes, the concrete boom, and the tiny laborers all moving about. This made me think about the countless other concrete mid-rise and high-rise buildings going up in and around West Palm Beach. My interest was piqued. Questions flooded in, often some variation of “How did they do that?” I was hooked. I had to know more. What is cement? How is it made? What is concrete? How is it made? How are high-rise buildings constructed? I wanted answers (at the lay-person level).

As a video, I share my experience of a 10K walk in a Quarry.

As a guide, (coming soon)  I have curated a collection of YouTube videos that, in an entertaining fashion, answer questions that begin, “How did they do that?”The collection includes  two videos about concrete architecture separated by 2000 years.

THE VIDEO

As an illustration of my concrete curiosity, this two-minute video takes you along on an adventure I had with my daughter in March 2025. By participating in a 10K walk/run race (I walked), I had a chance to visit a limestone quarry west of Miami in the lake district.
